Installing Carpet
Before discussing the most helpful carpet installation tips that will help you install any type of carpet properly, it is important that you know that you should spend some time analyzing the room you are going to install carpet in. This might seem like an unnecessary step, but if you take the time at the beginning to measure the room and visualize what the completed installation will look like it will save you a lot of time during the project. Proper planning helps to minimize the number of mistakes you make which will save you money as well. Buying more carpet after finding out you bought the wrong type, size or colour is both expensive and disheartening, so try to do it right the first time.
Once you have measured the dimensions of your room twice then you can go ahead and purchase the carpeting. During the installation phase of the project you should consider how you are going to align the new carpet to the adjacent sections of carpeting. Cutting the carpet correctly is extremely important because even the slightest mistake will throw off the alignment of the entire carpeting layout.
Taking all the furniture out of the room to be carpeted before you start working can be a lot of work, but it allows the padding and carpet installation to go much quicker. It also prevents the constant folding and unfolding of the carpet that would be required if some furniture was left in the room. Repeated bending can crack and sometimes permanently crease the carpet which will remain when the carpeting is completely installed. Another mandatory step of the process is to vacuum and mop the floor after ripping up the old carpet and before placing down the new tack strips. Be sure to let the floor dry completely after mopping the floor because if any moisture is trapped when the new carpet is laid, mold will form underneath and cause significant, irreversible damage. If at all possible, plan to install during the summer months and wait a day in between mopping and starting the installation.

Heating the floor of the room and the carpet will make installing carpet a lot easier. A warm carpet stretches a lot more easily and helps to prevent any bends or folds in the carpet. If you are looking to install carpet in a large room, you should get someone to help you manoeuvre the carpet. Rolls of carpet are usually quite heavy and awkward to move into place. The saying many hands makes light work is especially true for carpet installation projects.
Before using a knee kicker to attach the carpet to the tack strips and complete the project, make sure that the carpet is stretched evenly over the surface of the floor. The carpet might look properly aligned, but if it is stretched unevenly cracks and wrinkles could develop over time. A knee kicker and power stretcher are necessary tools if you want to stretch the carpet correctly. If you do not already own them, they can be rented at most hardware stores.
